Halloween Mix

I did this one almost exclusiviely by song titles that had something to do with an aspect of Halloween (there are some very slight exceptions). I tried to stay away from putting both obvious shit like Monster Mash/The Misfits on it and from putting a bunch of metal on it merely because the songs had words like "death" or "evil" or whatever in the title (which would've resulted in an almost endless mix of black metal, doom, and whatnot).

"Colonial" Cover

Got the cover and final layout for our new record from my good friend Ryan the other day. I'm extremely happy with how it came out. After my miserable experience with the "Ornament" layout, I decided that I'd like to work with a close friend this time around. Someone who's house I could go to and we could sit and brainstorm and work on it together while listening to records. I did just that. It was a learning process for both of us and it took a little longer than expected because of that but after everything is said and done, I'm glad I did it the way I did. Working with a close friend who understands both the band and what were were going for visually with this cover was the most important aspect of this for me.
The classic SWANS artwork, the minimal artwork of Man Is The Bastard, and the "Feeding" artwork done by members of Iron Lung were the main things we had in our heads during the brainstorming process for this.
The image within the circle was something that didn't come to me until after the initial brainstorming process for how the cover would look. Once the idea entered my head, nothing else could compare. I was obsessive about how much I wanted to use it.
Pocketknives are something I've collected since I was very young. For me they are a symbol of innocence, childhood, weapon, and tool. The inclusion of the pocketknife blade with zero pretense (no blood, no hand, no fear, nothing) is something that speaks powerfully to me. I think about the cover in many different ways, much like the "Ornament" cover. In also the same way as the "Ornament" cover, I invite you to find your own interpretation.

SWANS

My wife and I flew to NYC on Saturday to see Swans at the Bowery Ballroom. They were incredible. I had a great spot up front (stage right).

I stopped by HP earlier in the day to get some new tunes. Picked up some killer stuff, got a few recommendations per usual, and chatting with Dominick was a pleasure as always.

Why would you bother...

...putting art into the world if you're not going to give everything you have to it and make it the best that it can possibly be?

Often times the answers to this question are only excuses for laziness, failure, or total lack of any real ideas, inspiration, or creativity.
